Storage Unit Tips: Prepare Your Storage Unit

Now that you’ve secured your storage unit, it’s time to get it ready for your belongings. All of your units are steel construction with concrete floors and insulated ceilings. The garage style roll up doors allow easy drive up access to each unit. Here are few tips to get started.

Start with a clean unit: We inspect every unit after a tenant vacates to ensure the unit is clean and well maintained for the next tenant.

Install Shelving: Using mobile shelving units is a great way to add extra space to your storage unit. No permanant shelves are allowed but there are many options for mobile shelving units such as these metal shelves from Target but can also be found in many other homegoods stores. Shelves allow you to stack boxes and items which makes them easier to locate when you need them. You will be able store more items in a smaller space and if you plan to access your unit on a regular basis maybe to retrieve seasonal items, having a walkway through the unit is very helpful.

Boxes: Investing in clear plastic boxes is a great way to organize your unit. You can see through the box to easily identify the contents. Plastic boxes can easily be stacked as they are usually quite sturdy. The plastic is also durable, lasts longer and keeps out dust/pests better than cardboard boxes. Carboard boxes can be handy for many items such as dishes, TV, electronics etc but be sure to use sturdy carboard boxes and tape them closed. Cardboard boxes should not be placed on the floor and be aware of stacking too much ontop of the carboard boxes as they can crumple under heavy weight.

Locks: Using a quality lock is always recommended. We strongly encourage round/disc locks like these which we sell in our office and can place in the unit for you.

Labels: Label your boxes to help you know what is inside the box. Organize shelves or boxes by related content. For example, store all kitchen related boxes together. On the label include what room the contents belong in. This will make unpacking so much easier. As boxes are moved into your new living space the box can be placed in or near the room where the contents of the box belong. You may also want to make a master list of what is inside the unit especially if you have more than one unit. Knowing what items are in which unit will save so much time searching inside the unit.

Maximize your storage unit space with shelving and protect your belongings with sturdy plastic boxes, quality locks and always find what you’re looking for by using labels!
